How to stay safe in martial arts

1. Choose your sparring partner wisely.
Reject sparring with persons who are too dangerous to spar with.

2. Don’t try to be the tough guy.
If your opponent gets a submission on you, tap early enough.

3. Know how to do a proper break fall.
If your opponent throws you, it’s important to know how to fall properly.

4. Release grips early enough.
If your opponent double grips one of your sleeve to pull, loosen your grip.

5. Keep your shoulder closed while throwing.
If you throw your opponent (e.g. Tai-otoshi, Harai-goshi), try to keep your shoulder closed.

6. Supinate your ankle while reap-/sweeping.
If you throw your opponent (e.g. De-ashi-barai, Ko-soto-gari), supinate your ankle to prevent impact from the base joint of your big toe.

7. Point your knee downwards during Tai-otoshi.
If you keep your leg straight and your opponent falls onto it, it can end badly.
